Fable 2 First Impressions

After spending the longest day in eternity at work while watching each second tick by as if it would never end, I began my high and low search for a copy of Fable 2 yesterday.

Finally finding my copy, at a long forgotten game store in the sticks, I immediately rushed home, removed the seals and jammed the disc into the tray.

Right from the very first time you press the A button and hear the voice, “Our story begins”, excitement takes over.

I had already long decided to follow the path of an evil mage and similar to the first Fable, you can get started on your quest of evil straight away.

I’ll talk about my adventure in another post, but I wanted to give my first impressions of the game.

Overall, the game is astounding and a tremendous amount of fun already.

Magic is over simplified though and I find it terribly frustrating to wield multiple spells.  The other downside is that they’ve removed the Will power management completely.  You can more of less cast spells all day long with no recourse.  This means, that within a couple of hours, I was able to start annihilating guards and citizens alike.  Amusing, but I didn’t feel like I deserved to be that powerful yet.

The game has also frozen several times on me.  Naturally I hadn’t saved for awhile and had to repeat a lot of tasks I had already done.

The dog is a welcome feature though.  It was incredibly frustrating in the first Fable to try and find hidden items and gather enough silver keys to unlock anything.  Having the dog around, and training him to be better in tracking right away is a key tactic to finding everything in each area.

Overall, the game has a wide variety of features, things to do, ways to make money and decisions to make which physically affect, not just you, but the state of the world as well.

Don’t listen to the 10 hour estimated game time comments.  There is enough to do in Fable 2 that you will be playing, and then replaying this game for hours, and days, to come.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Demo Review

If you’re a fan of the old Jedi Knight games, or are just a fan of Star Wars in general, you’re going to find something enjoyable about the upcoming Star Wars: Force Unleashed.

You take control of Darth Vadar’s secret Apprentice and your very first mission is to assassinate one of the few remaining Jedi Masters deep in the heart of an Imperial base.  Vadar’s last command is to ensure nobody knows you were there by killing everyone, Imperial and Rebel alike leading you to believe this is going to be one dark game!

Playing the game is pretty intuitive and only took a few minutes to learn how to use the force.  You’re able to use all the standard force powers like push, grip and lightning early on and from what I can tell in the demo, these powers will increase as you level up your character.

Gripping objects and throwing them at enemies seems to be pretty straightforward and didn’t require screwing around with the controls too much.  There were a few camera issues, but they’re hard to avoid with any third-person game.  A quick flick of the camera reset button solved most issues.

Graphics are impressive and tech geeks like myself are really going to enjoy seeing the destructible environments and “Euphoria” embedded characters.  Euphoria basically means your character will react to its environment and not just a standard fall down animation.  This means that it will be a unique experience every time you are hit or miss a jump.

My biggest concern with a game of this type is replayability.  Using the force is cool and the unique experience each play through only goes so far, but how much time are you really going to get out of this game before you’re bored to tears.

Only time and the full release on September 16, 2008 will tell.
